Botulinum Type A Toxin “Neuromodulators“, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin®, are made of very low doses of purified protein produced by Clostridium botulinum bacterium. This Health Canada authorized medication is used for specific therapeutic uses, including temporary relaxation of muscles. Neuromodulators are injected directly into muscles to block the transmission of nerve impulses to reduce the activity of the injected muscles. This temporary prevention of muscle contraction results in the reduction of facial lines; namely, the dynamic wrinkles in the upper facial area, including forehead, side of the eyes, and the frown lines. Apart from the areas mentioned, there are many off label cosmetic uses of neuromodulators. There is minimal to no downtime following neuromodulator injections. The results of BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and/or Xeomin® take an average of 4-7 days to come into effect. The treatment duration itself is rather quick, lasting approximately 15 minutes depending on the area(s) treated. Because neuromodulators are not for permanent changes to the body, injected muscles, especially those that are strong and frequently used, gradually return to their pre-treatment state without periodic repeat treatments. Most patients repeat injections every 3-6 months for the maintenance of treatment benefits, depending on the treatment area(s), current muscle movement, and patient preference.
